Catch of the Week
Diver

Photography and Cebu go perfectly together. Like a pimms and lemonade on a warm summer evening, seeing Cebu through the camera lens can leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling. This week was certainly no exception as the resort was filled with eager divers, cameras to the ready. Led by Martin Edge, one of UK’s leading underwater photographers, the group plunged into the aqua waters surrounding the Oxygene Kasai Village resort.

Cebu is normally considered the macro lovers destination, packed with harlequin shrimp, pigmy seahorses and mandarin fish. Then there are the frog fish, renowned masters of camouflage. And let’s not forget the nudibranchs in all their rainbow colours. With such a treasure trove to be discovered on the reefs around the Kasai village, it was a real added bonus that one of the first spots of the week was nothing less than a whaleshark. Over the course of the week, 3 whalesharks were spotted! Not bad for a place more famous for her small critters.

Not to be outdone, Whirlwind was also home to yet more keen photographers. Whereas Martin Edge specialises in SLR cameras, Maria Munn focuses on compact cameras and was on board to help out with any tricky questions. Ever wanted to know how to avoid blue photos? Maria is the woman. Whirlwind rarely fails to find the best that the Northern Red Sea has to offer and continued her winning streak in style . Risso dolphins are rare, but can be seen in the North, alongside their more common Bottlenose and Spinner cousins. Whirlwind’s guests went one step further however, as they were able to up close and personal with a pod of Rissos in the water. Something the guests will never forget.
